The biggest changes in IELTS that people should know is that the listening exams in the general and academic side tend to be more difficult than the Cambridge books.

This is important for you to know, because you will need to train with higher level material.  

There are many books available, and we will NOT lie that MOST IELTS books are really NOT GOOD.  They are too general, not specific, and teach very little.  IELTSKING will change this, but first we will recommend some basic books depending on the level of the student. ​





 

Band 4 students=Barron's IELTS
If you are grade 4 in IELTS Listening, the book by Barron's would be more suitable, but remember, this book is only suitable for beginners and the reading part is not suitable for most.  The 'real' tests are not good, either.  However, the listening part is easy and good to practice with.  If you can get this book cheap, get it!  



​Band 5 students=Cambridge 5-6

Whereas for grade 5, you may want to learn listening using some of the older Cambridge test books, such as Cambridge 5 and 6, yet apply lots of skill and complete the tests twice with different coloured pens before checking the answers.

​​For band 6 and band 7 students, you will need a harder listening test.  One of those tests could come from some of the Chinese books for IELTS.  The Beijing Eye is one of them, but it must be used well.  Some of the units are not designed well, and so you will need help to use this book, so as not to waste time.



I found that Cambridge IELTS 9 also provided a harder listening test, therefore I suggest that this is a better book than the others, too!

There is a lot of material out there, use it well.​  Another method is to check the IELTS KING listening as we will have predictions in the future for that.

You can also listen to ALL the listening parts from the Cambridge books and write down the key words and meanings and check the back of the book to see if you are correct.



For band 8 students



A lot of students waste a lot of time studying incorrectly to gain this grade.  A strong teacher who can 'teach' properly is required to fix this.

This is the time when you can begin using newspapers, documentaries and Time to learn the real chunks of English.  However, it would help to first have some classes from a qualified IELTS teacher to explained how to use them with the IELTS.
